Feb 23, 2008 - Scholarship
At the annual board meeting of The Beta Foundation, the board approved a resolution in recognition of the campaign generosity of Denman "Mac" MacNear '48, approving a new scholarship program called the McNear-Galliard 22 The Fenway Award, honoring Mac, his pledge brother Dave Galliard (Chapter Eternal), and all alumni brothers who lived at 22 The Fenway.
This award, funded by existing educational funds, will provide summer living grants to Chi Phi actives in MIT's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) when they stay in Boston for summer research positions. The grants will help support Beta actives who work side-by-side with some of the most brilliant faculty in the world.
One challenge of UROP positions is that they often pay less than an MIT student could make by living at home and working a standard job. By paying actives' summer living expenses to live at the Chapter House, the McNear-Galliard 22 The Fenway Award program will help more Beta brothers accept UROP positions, and will keep more brothers living in the Chapter House at 32 Hereford Street over the summer.
